I had the pleasure of visiting Fotini Chandrika Walton at The Big Red Barn Creativity and Wellness Centre in early October. She introduced me to her lovely Horse Teachers, and we talked about the company’s approach to holistic wellness.
Established in 2012, the Big Red Barn became a Not-For-Profit corporation in 2015. Their mandate is Equine Guided Wellness with an emphasis on self-expression through the creative arts. In 2017, Horse Wisdom Yoga was launched, a co-creation between Fotini and the Herd, teaching people how to reconnect to their true nature both on and off the mat. The literal meaning of Yoga is “unity” and Horse Wisdom Yoga seeks to create a union between human and horse, resulting in more meaningful connections to the natural world and all of its inhabitants. All activities are done on the ground and no Horse or Yoga experience is necessary.
Fotini explained to me that Horses have huge hearts and that, in their presence, our minds become more quiet as we are influenced by their large, open hearts. The intuitively designed Equine Guided Wellness activities expand on this heart connection and provide insight and clarity to the human participant as they reconnect to a deeper part of themselves.
The Big Red Barn is a safe and welcoming place to explore the essence of our total being (mind, body and spirit). The Centre provides the opportunity to take some time to reacquaint yourself with the nature within, where we embody all of the tools we need to live our very best life!
